Originally scored for Soprano, Violin and Organ, Ave Maria was written in the early stages of Pejačević’s compositional life. This short work encapsulates the serene nature of the traditional Catholic prayer which has often been set to music.
Although she was born into an aristocratic family, Dora Pejačević (1885–1923) was deeply attuned to the societal issues of her time and expressed a difficulty in relating to those of the same social class. She broke away from the traditional expectations surrounding her noble upbringing and gender, pursuing a career in composition alongside her many other interests. She composed her first piece at the age of only 12 and went on to write over 100 compositions, with her Symphony in F-sharp minor being considered a significant milestone in Croatian music. Tragically, she died at 38 due to complications from childbirth, cutting short a promising career.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Hail Mary, full of grace,
Dominus tecum. The Lord is with thee.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Blessed art thou amongst women,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Holy Mary, Mother of God,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus, Pray for us sinners,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
