Description

Mel Bonis (1858–1937) was born into a modest Parisian family. As a child, her musical talent was reluctantly supported by her family after her teacher – César Franck – convinced them to allow her to study at the Paris Conservatoire. She was never able to complete her studies as her parents ordered her into a marriage with a music-averse businessman, which resulted in a prolonged break from composing as she became burdened by the domestic expectations placed upon her.

Several years later, she returned to composing and wrote over 300 musical works. Almost all of her compositions were published during her lifetime, a testament to the high regard she was held in as a musician.

Viviane is one of nine works composed by Mel Bonis, each highlighting extraordinary destinies. Often known as the Lady of the Lake in Arthurian legend, Viviane is a mystical and enigmatic figure, renowned for gifting King Arthur with the magical sword Excalibur—thereby shaping both his fate and the destiny of Camelot. She embodies the dual forces of protection and manipulation through magic, her narrative deeply entwined with the legendary tale of King Arthur and his knights.

The opening theme is dance-like, infused with salon music typical of the era, evoking the enchanting allure of the fairy figure. This is followed by a more harmonically fluid middle section, conjuring vivid imagery of an aquatic castle and its captivating magical presence.
